Democratic Party candidate Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate election, defeating former Republican Congressman Mike Rogers and making history as he is set to become the first Muslim member of the US Senate.
Major US media outlets have projected El-Sayed as the winner. He is expected to take office when the new Congress convenes in January.
The Michigan Senate seat had been held by Democrats and became vacant following the retirement of Senator Gary Peters. El-Sayed, a physician and former public health official, secured the Democratic nomination after winning a competitive party primary.
His Muslim identity became a major issue during the election campaign. Republican leaders, including President Donald Trump, criticised his religious background, while allegations linking him to extremism were also raised. El-Sayed rejected those accusations.
He celebrated his victory with supporters at an election gathering in Michigan early Wednesday. In his remarks, he thanked voters and directed pointed comments at Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
“Michigan, I look forward to serving you with the same generosity, open-mindedness, strength and sincerity that you have shown me,” El-Sayed said.
Addressing his supporters, he added: “Let them know that the bad guys lost. Let them know that together, we fought and won for something bigger. We won! Mike, enjoy your retirement.”
El-Sayed also addressed Vice President JD Vance, saying he would have a constitutional responsibility to administer his oath of office in January.
Turning to Trump, he said: “Donald, I know you had trouble pronouncing my name. After JD swears me in this January, you can just call me Senator.”
Trump narrowly won Michigan in the 2024 presidential election. El-Sayed’s victory in the state’s Senate race is therefore a significant gain for Democrats.
