Murder Case Filed After Jamaat Leader Killed in Sherpur Clash, Over 230 Named as Suspects
A murder case has been filed following the death of Jamaat leader Rezaul Karim in a clash between Jamaat and BNP activists in Jhenaigati Upazila, Sherpur. The case names 234 individuals as accused, with an additional 400–500 unidentified suspects.
The case was lodged on Friday at midnight by Rezaul Karim’s wife, Marzia Begum, at the Jhenaigati police station, two days after the incident. Rezaul Karim served as the secretary of the Sherpur’s Sreebardi Upazila Jamaat.
The clash occurred on Wednesday afternoon during an election manifesto reading in the Sherpur-3 constituency (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati). The confrontation, reportedly sparked over a seating dispute, left at least 30 people injured. Rezaul Karim was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital but died en route. District Jamaat Amir Hafizur Rahman alleged that Karim was brutally beaten with bricks.
Afsan Al Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Nalitabari Circle in Sherpur, said the names of the accused are being withheld for investigative purposes, and police operations to arrest them are ongoing.
