A crude explosive device, commonly known as a cocktail bomb, exploded outside the main gate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court on Tuesday afternoon, shortly after a high-profile verdict was delivered in a case related to alleged crimes against humanity linked to the July uprising.

According to police, the explosion occurred between 1:15 p.m. and 1:20 p.m. in front of the court’s main entrance.

The incident took place shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal-2 announced its verdict, sentencing seven senior leaders of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations, including former General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death.

Suspect Fled on Motorcycle

Speaking to reporters, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman said an unidentified individual arrived on a motorcycle and detonated the device near the Supreme Court gate before fleeing the scene.

Police have not yet made any arrests.

“We have not detained anyone so far, but efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible,” the OC said.

Security Concerns Raised

The explosion has raised fresh security concerns around one of the country’s most important judicial institutions, particularly following the tribunal’s verdict involving prominent political figures.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are reviewing available evidence to determine the motive and identify those involved.

No immediate reports of casualties or significant property damage were available at the time of reporting.

Tribunal Verdict

Earlier in the day, a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, handed down death sentences to seven convicted individuals associated with the banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies in connection with the case.
