Following the formation of a new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), discussions have begun regarding possible changes in the top ranks of the police force. Speculation is growing over who may be appointed as the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the new Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
According to reliable sources within law enforcement, several senior officials are being considered for the post of IGP. Among those reportedly under discussion are Delwar Hossain Mia, Additional IGP of the Highway Police; Ali Hossain Fakir, Additional IGP of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn); Md. Shibgat Ullah, head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID); and AKM Shahidur Rahman, Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
Shahidur Rahman was appointed on a contractual basis by the interim government to lead Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) following efforts to reorganize the force after the 2024 mass uprising. His contract is scheduled to expire on March 15.
The name of retired Additional IGP Matiur Rahman Sheikh has also surfaced in discussions regarding the IGP position. Additionally, retired police officer Ansar Uddin Khan Pathan, currently serving as coordinator (Grade-1) of the investigation agency at the International Crimes Tribunal, is reportedly being considered. He retired from active service in 2022.
Sources at Police Headquarters note that current IGP Baharul Alam was appointed on November 20, 2024, on a two-year contractual term by the interim administration, leaving approximately nine months remaining in his tenure.
Meanwhile, for the position of DMP Commissioner, the names being discussed include Hasib Aziz, Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), and Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Additional IGP (Logistics and Asset Acquisition). Faruk Ahmed, Additional Director General of RAB, is also being mentioned as a potential candidate.
The contractual term of the current DMP Commissioner, Sheikh Md. Sazzat Ali, is set to conclude on November 21 this year.
Multiple sources indicate that with the BNP now in power, significant reshuffles are likely across the police, RAB, and other law enforcement agencies.
