High Court Verdict Upheld: Four Cases Against Tarique Rahman Dismissed

The Appellate Division of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has upheld a High Court decision to dismiss four extortion cases against BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. A four-member bench, led by Senior Justice Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the state’s appeal, effectively maintaining the High Court’s ruling.
The cases, filed in 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government, were registered at the Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka. On October 23, 2023, a High Court bench comprising Justices AKM Asaduzzaman and Syed Enayetur Rahman quashed the cases. The state subsequently appealed against this decision, arguing that the High Court’s ruling was flawed. However, the Appellate Division dismissed the appeal during Sunday’s hearing.
Tarique Rahman’s legal counsel, Barristers Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaiser Kamal, emphasized their commitment to resolving the cases through legal procedures. They noted that Rahman faces nearly 80 cases and intends to address all of them through legal channels. BNP’s Law Affairs Secretary, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, further stated that Rahman expressed interest in resolving his cases only after political cases against other party members are settled.
