In the La Liga title race, every match has become crucial. On Saturday night, Real Madrid secured a convincing 4–1 victory over Elche CF, reducing the gap with league leaders FC Barcelona to just one point, although Madrid have played one game more.
After the match, most discussions were expected to focus on the tight battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the spotlight shifted to Madrid’s young Turkish midfielder Arda Güler, who produced an astonishing goal late in the game.
The moment came in the 89th minute. Güler intercepted a misplaced pass slightly outside the penalty area in Madrid’s own half. After taking a short touch forward, he attempted an ambitious long-range shot that stunned everyone in the stadium. The strike, taken from about 68 meters, sailed toward goal as the opposing goalkeeper scrambled back but failed to stop it.
Players, coaches, and fans were left in disbelief. Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa was seen on the sidelines holding his head in amazement at the spectacular effort. Many fans on social media quickly suggested that the goal deserved consideration for the FIFA Puskás Award.
Regardless of awards, the strike has already secured a place in La Liga history. It is now tied for the longest-distance goal ever scored in the league, matching the record set in 2004 when Antonio José scored from the same distance while playing for CD Numancia against Sevilla FC. It also marked the first time since 1995 that a Real Madrid player scored in La Liga from inside his own half. The previous Madrid player to achieve a similar feat was Agustín Lasa, who scored from 58 meters.
Speaking to Real Madrid TV, Madrid forward Brahim Díaz praised his teammate, saying Güler had previously attempted a similar shot in another match that struck the crossbar, but this time he completed it with a goal. Arbeloa added that witnessing such a strike alone made the ticket to the stadium worthwhile.
Real Madrid had already secured the win before Güler’s remarkable goal. Antonio Rüdiger opened the scoring in the 39th minute, followed by Federico Valverde doubling the lead just before halftime. After the break, Dean Huijsen made it 3–0 in the 66th minute. Elche pulled one back through an own goal in the 85th minute, but Güler’s long-range strike sealed the 4–1 victory.
With the win, Real Madrid now have 66 points from 28 matches, while Barcelona remain top with 67 points from 27 games. Barcelona are scheduled to face Sevilla FC later tonight in La Liga.
Real Madrid’s next challenge will come in the UEFA Champions League, where they will face Manchester City on 17 March at 2:00 AM (Bangladesh time). Madrid head into the match with confidence after winning the first leg 3–0 at home.
