U.S. May Lift Maritime Restrictions on Iranian Ports if Hormuz Agreement Is Reached

A potential agreement between Iran and Oman aimed at ensuring the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz could lead the United States to remove maritime restrictions imposed on Iranian ports, according to a U.S. official cited by Reuters.

The official said negotiations between Tehran and Muscat have made progress and that Washington is optimistic an agreement could be finalized in the near future.

Under the proposed arrangement, Iran and Oman would work to guarantee uninterrupted commercial shipping through the strategic waterway, one of the world’s most important routes for global energy supplies and trade.

The U.S. official indicated that Washington would consider lifting restrictions on Iranian ports once it is satisfied that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz can operate normally and without interference. However, any decision would depend on Iran fulfilling the commitments outlined in the agreement.

According to the official, the United States plans to closely monitor Iran’s implementation of the deal before determining its next steps.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have signaled that even if an agreement with Oman is reached, the Strait of Hormuz may not be fully reopened under all circumstances. Their comments suggest that some limitations or security measures could remain in place despite progress in negotiations.

The talks come amid continued international attention on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas exports pass each day.
