Dhaka University’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, described the recent clash between Dhaka University (DU) and affiliated seven college students as “unfortunate and regrettable.” In a video message early Monday, he expressed deep sorrow over the incident and urged all parties to remain calm. He stated that he believes mutual understanding and discussions can resolve the misunderstanding and reduce the tension between the two groups.
Earlier, students from the seven affiliated colleges gathered outside DU’s Mukti O Gonotontro Toron, accusing the Pro-VC of inappropriate behavior during a meeting about reducing admission quotas and other issues. Allegedly, Dr. Ahmed dismissed their concerns, stating he was unaware of matters relating to the seven colleges. They also claimed he had ignored a memorandum submitted 21 days prior and acted dismissively toward their representatives. This prompted protests that escalated when DU’s students from F Rahman Hall took a defensive stance, leading to altercations.
Protests began Sunday evening when students from the seven colleges blocked key areas like Science Lab, Technical Intersection, and Tantibazar. A representative, Abdur Rahman, demanded an apology from the Pro-VC and outlined five key demands to address their grievances. The situation intensified with both groups engaging in clashes around 11:30 PM, sparking widespread concern.
