A patient died after getting stuck in the hospital elevator

The death of a patient named Mumtaz Begum (53) has been reported after getting stuck in the lift of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital in Gazipur. Relatives complained that the elevator was stuck for 45 minutes.

The incident took place at the hospital around 11 am on Sunday. Mumtaz Begum is the wife of Sharfuddin of Barigao village of Kapasia upazila.

Mumtaz’s uncle Shahadat Hossain Salim said that he and Mumtaz’s son Mannan (25) and daughter Sharmin (20) came to the emergency department of the hospital with Mumtaz at around 6 o’clock this morning due to illness. Seeing the physical condition of Mumtaz, she was admitted to the hospital. While taking the elevator from the 11th floor to the fourth floor to see the doctor, the elevator suddenly stopped.

He said, we are stuck in the elevator for 45 minutes. Later, the hospital people opened the lift on the ninth floor and brought us out. But Mumtaz died before coming out.

He also said that a hospital worker named Alauddin, who was in the lift, tried to save Mumtaz. At that time there were 18 to 20 people in the elevator.

Deputy Director of Gazipur Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. Jahangir Alam said, Mumtaz Begum was brought to the hospital in the morning with chest pain. Later taken from the medicine department to the 4th floor in the elevator. At this time, a mechanical fault occurred in the elevator. The elevator is stuck for a long time. Later liftman and fire service people came and rescued. Everyone trapped in the elevator was healthy, but he died because he was sick. The matter will be investigated. If there is any negligence, action will be taken.
