BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has called for the swift completion of essential state reforms to restore democratic governance through an election acceptable to all.
Speaking as the chief guest at an extended party meeting held at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building on Thursday, she joined virtually from London.
Highlighting the country’s current crisis, Khaleda Zia stated that the combined efforts of the people and students led to the downfall of the fascist regime. An interim government has now been formed, and the public expects it to complete the minimum necessary state reforms and hold an election that everyone can accept to transition back to democracy.
She paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the long anti-fascist struggle, especially those who were martyred in the brutal suppression and mass killings of July and August. She also expressed her deep sympathy for the injured and reassured her party members that, despite being in the UK for medical treatment, she remains by their side.
Reflecting on the past 15 years, Khaleda Zia acknowledged the relentless struggle for democracy and her own freedom. She honored the sacrifices of party leaders and activists who lost their lives, suffered enforced disappearances, or endured persecution. With over a hundred thousand legal cases still pending, she emphasized that the nation’s sacrifices for democracy will be remembered forever.
