Multi-Party Participation in Second Round of Consensus Talks

The second phase of the National Consensus Commission’s dialogue with representatives of various political parties began on Monday, June 2, at 5 PM at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. The session was inaugurated by the Commission’s Chief Adviser, Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Chaired by Dr. Yunus, the dialogue brought together leaders from nearly 28 political parties, including BNP Standing Committee member Salauddin Ahmed and advisers Ismail Jobiullah and Ruhul Quddus Kajol; Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Syed Abdullah Abu Taher, Hamidur Rahman Azad, and Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan; NCP Convenor Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhtar Hossain; AB Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad; Nurul Haque Nur from Gono Adhikar Parishad; Tipu Biswas from Jatiya Ganofront; Islamic Unity Alliance Secretary General Maulana Sakhawat Hossain Raji; Rafiqul Islam Khan, Assistant Secretary General of the same party; Manjurul Islam Afendi from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam; and Ahmad Abdul Kader from Khelafat Majlish.
According to the Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, this dialogue could finalize the much-discussed “July Charter,” a roadmap for democratic reforms.
The National Consensus Commission was formed to review and finalize recommendations regarding the constitution, judiciary, electoral system, public administration, and the Anti-Corruption Commission. The first round of dialogue was held from February 15 to May 19, involving meetings with 33 political parties.
