Bangladeshi Identity Allegation False, Lawyer Argues in Saif Case

Indian police arrested a man named Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad on Sunday morning, January 19, in connection with an attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. Following the arrest, authorities claimed that the suspect is believed to be a Bangladeshi citizen.
Shehzad was presented before a Mumbai court, which granted a five-day police remand. However, his lawyer argued that there is no evidence to prove Shehzad’s Bangladeshi citizenship. Instead, he stated that Shehzad has been living in Mumbai with his family for over seven years.
According to reports from The Times of India and India Today, Shehzad was apprehended from Hiranandani Estate in Thane, Maharashtra. Police alleged that he had entered India from Bangladesh six months ago. However, Shehzad’s lawyer, Sandeep Shekhani, refuted these claims, asserting that his client has been a resident of Mumbai for years.
Sandeep further stated, “Shehzad has been placed in five-day police custody, and the court has instructed the police to submit a detailed report during this period. There is no evidence supporting the claim that he is Bangladeshi, and the assertion that he entered six months ago is false. This is a clear violation of Section 43A of the Indian Penal Code, as the investigation has been conducted improperly.”
