A fresh surge of COVID-19 cases has emerged in India, with over 1,000 people reported infected across the country. According to a report published Monday (May 26) by Indian news outlet NDTV, a total of 1,009 cases have been recorded nationwide. The capital city, Delhi, has reported at least 104 cases, with 99 of them surfacing just within the past week.

Kerala tops the list of most affected states, registering 430 cases. Maharashtra follows with 209 infections, while Delhi ranks third. Other affected states include Gujarat (83 cases), Karnataka (47), Uttar Pradesh (15), and West Bengal (12).

In terms of fatalities, Maharashtra has reported at least four COVID-related deaths, while Kerala has seen two, and Karnataka one.

Meanwhile, several states and union territories — including Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir — have not reported any new infections.

This resurgence of the virus comes years after the devastating global outbreak in 2020, which claimed millions of lives worldwide.
