Bangladesh has appointed former Supreme Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman as the new Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), ending a leadership gap that lasted more than five months.

The government also named Dr. Jahangir Alam Khan and Dr. Mohammad Sazzad Hossain Bhuiyan as commissioners, completing the three-member commission responsible for overseeing the country’s anti-corruption watchdog.

Leadership Restored After Months of Uncertainty

The appointments were approved by the President following recommendations from a selection committee tasked with identifying candidates for the commission.

Officials said the newly appointed chairman and commissioners are expected to formally assume their duties at ACC headquarters in Dhaka shortly.

The commission had been operating without a full leadership structure since March, when the previous chairman and two commissioners stepped down simultaneously.

Who Is AKM Asaduzzaman?

Justice AKM Asaduzzaman retired from Bangladesh’s Appellate Division in February 2026 after serving in both the High Court and the country’s highest judicial institutions.

His appointment places a veteran jurist at the helm of one of Bangladesh’s most influential accountability bodies.

New Commission Faces Immediate Challenges

The incoming leadership is expected to confront several high-profile corruption allegations and pending investigations that accumulated during the commission’s prolonged vacancy.

Governance experts say restoring the commission’s operational capacity will be crucial as public expectations grow for stronger enforcement against financial misconduct and abuse of power.

Why the Appointment Matters

The ACC plays a central role in investigating corruption allegations involving public officials, government institutions, and major financial crimes.

Observers believe the reconstitution of the commission could accelerate decision-making, investigations, and policy initiatives that were slowed by the absence of a fully functioning leadership team.

With a chairman and commissioners now in place, attention is expected to shift toward how the new commission handles pending complaints, major corruption cases, and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability.
