HC demands explanation from cop over student abuse

Sahidul Biswas, who was serving as a sub-inspector at Dhanmondi Police Station at the time, has been directed to appear before the High Court on February 9. This order was issued by the HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter during the hearing of an appeal filed by Inzamamul Islam, also known as Zisan, who is currently in prison. Inzamamul, a student of Dhaka City College, is challenging the trial court’s verdict in the 2014 murder case of Ayaz Haq, a student of Government Laboratory High School.
On December 10, 2020, a Dhaka court sentenced Inzamamul to life imprisonment until death, while five others received life sentences for their involvement in the murder. Inzamamul’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, alleged that during police remand, SI Sahidul and other officers tortured his client—beating him, administering electric shocks, and injecting syringes into his left leg. The officers also allegedly demanded Tk 10 lakh from his family to stop the torture. SI Sahidul has denied all allegations.
