Is a golden era at Anfield coming to an end? Could the familiar image of the “Reds” that fans have cherished over recent years change as soon as next season? That possibility seems increasingly likely. Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has offered his own prediction: he believes Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk could leave the club next summer.

Salah and van Dijk only signed new contracts last season, extending their stays until 2027. Yet questions are emerging about how much of a role the two experienced stars have in coach Arne Slot’s future plans. With a squad increasingly built around young, record-breaking signings, the time may be nearing for the veteran duo to make way.

Last season, Liverpool spent nearly €260 million to bring in Swedish striker Alexander Isak (€144 million) and German midfielder Florian Wirtz (€125 million). High expectations accompanied these signings, but injuries and inconsistent performances have limited their impact. Collymore believes the club’s long-term strategy is being structured around these younger players.

Speaking to Goal.com, Collymore said, “If Arne Slot wants to launch his ‘Liverpool 2.0,’ at least one of Salah or van Dijk may have to leave next summer. To make room for new talent, the veterans will need to step aside.”

Salah’s recent behavior has also sparked discussion. Once mentioned alongside Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, and Steven Gerrard as Liverpool legends, the current circumstances are different. Collymore suggests that as excitement grows around younger players like Isak and Wirtz, global stars like Salah might feel somewhat overshadowed.

Collymore explained, “When thousands of fans tweet to welcome Isak and Wirtz, Salah may feel his influence is diminishing. He’s a world-class star and a reason many support Liverpool—but ultimately, the club’s needs take precedence over individual sentiment.”

Van Dijk will turn 35 this July, and the club may keep the defensive anchor for another season. Salah’s situation, however, is different. Collymore emphasized, “I think next summer, Salah will definitely leave.”

Could the end of Liverpool’s golden chapter also begin with him?
