On Friday evening, May 30, following a board meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu announced that former national cricketer Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new BCB President. The same meeting also finalized Nazmul Abedeen Fahim and Fahim Sinha as BCB Vice Presidents.

This decision came after the National Sports Council (NSC) canceled the nomination of previous BCB President Faruque Ahmed on Thursday night. Following that, on Friday afternoon, Aminul was nominated as a director, and by evening, he was elected president during the board meeting.

Aminul Islam, who represented Bangladesh for over a decade, played 13 Tests and 39 ODIs, and was the country’s first Test centurion. After retiring from international cricket in 2002, he transitioned into coaching and administrative roles. Over the past decade, he held key positions with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Before joining BCB, he served as the ICC’s Development Manager for the Asia region, a role he is set to complete next month.

Last August, the NSC had nominated both Faruque Ahmed and Nazmul Abedeen as BCB directors. Backed by several board members, Faruque took over as president. However, after only nine months, the NSC revoked his nomination. Prior to that, Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud met Faruque on Wednesday night and reportedly urged him to resign — a suggestion he ignored. That night, eight BCB directors submitted a letter of no confidence against Faruque to the NSC, leading to the swift cancellation of his nomination and removal from the presidency.

Aminul Islam’s tenure as BCB President will continue through October.
