Tamim Iqbal Pulls Out of BCB Elections

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has decided not to contest the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. On Wednesday morning, around 10:15 AM, he visited the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur to officially withdraw his nomination papers.

The polls are scheduled for October 6, with today (October 1) being the final day to withdraw candidacies before the official list of candidates is announced.

Rumors about Tamim’s withdrawal had been circulating since Tuesday, with several sources indicating that between 10 and 12 candidates backed by different clubs would step aside in protest against alleged government interference in the election process. Representatives of various clubs even held an emergency meeting last night to finalize their stance.

On Tuesday afternoon, the High Court issued an order suspending the inclusion of 15 controversial club representatives from the third-division cricket league in the voter list. This order came after a petition by former BCB president Faruque Ahmed. Following this development, speculation grew stronger that Tamim might step away from the race — which he has now confirmed.

Earlier, on September 21, Tamim publicly accused the authorities of meddling in the election process, alleging misuse of power by the BCB president and undue government involvement in finalizing district and divisional councilors.

Alongside Tamim, several other candidates also withdrew their nominations today, including Israfil Khasru (son of BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury), who was set to contest from Axiom Cricketers, citing the same reason of political interference.
