On Friday, June 13, at 2 PM Bangladesh time, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman held a significant meeting with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser, at a hotel in London. The discussion, which lasted about an hour and a half, concluded at 3:30 PM, after which Tarique Rahman departed from the Dorchester Hotel.

 

Following the meeting, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media. Dr. Khalilur Rahman read out a joint statement summarizing the discussion.

 

According to the statement, Tarique Rahman and Dr. Yunus engaged in a cordial and productive dialogue. Tarique proposed that the next national election be held before the upcoming Ramadan. He conveyed that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also believes this would be a suitable timeframe.

 

In response, the Chief Adviser noted that he had already announced plans to hold elections within the first half of April next year. He added that if preparations are completed on time, it might also be possible to conduct the election in the week before Ramadan begins in 2026. However, he emphasized that substantial progress in reforms and judicial matters would be essential by then.

 

Tarique Rahman welcomed the Chief Adviser’s position and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the party, while the Chief Adviser also thanked Tarique Rahman for the constructive discussions.
