After completing a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has returned to Bangladesh. According to information from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, his delegation landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday morning at approximately 9:45 AM, arriving on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.
Dr. Yunus and his team departed London’s Heathrow Airport on Friday at 7:15 PM local time. During his UK trip, Dr. Yunus held several high-level meetings, including discussions with the Speaker of the House of Commons and other key figures, and participated in various events.
One of the most notable moments of the trip was a one-and-a-half-hour meeting between Dr. Yunus and BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. In a joint statement, it was noted that the meeting took place in a very cordial atmosphere. Following Tarique Rahman’s proposal, Dr. Yunus stated that, if adequate preparations are achieved, national elections in Bangladesh could be held during the week preceding Ramadan in 2026. However, he emphasized that significant progress on reforms and justice would be necessary for this timeline to be realistic.
On Thursday, Dr. Yunus also met with King Charles III and was awarded the “King Charles III Harmony Award 2025” in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the welfare of humanity.
The Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, informed reporters that one of the top priorities of this visit was to initiate the recovery of funds allegedly laundered from Bangladesh during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, amounting to an estimated USD 234 billion, with a significant portion believed to have been moved to the UK. According to the Press Secretary, British authorities have shown considerable cooperation in this regard, pointing to the recent asset seizure involving former Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed as a key example.
