A redesigned 500-taka banknote will begin circulating tomorrow. Bangladesh Bank announced that the first batch will be available from its Motijheel office, with other branches distributing it later.

Unlike the current version featuring Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait, the new note uses a different visual theme. It includes illustrations of the Central Shaheed Minar and the Bangladesh Supreme Court. The note also carries the signature of Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur.

What’s on the New Note

The updated 500-taka note, signed by the governor, measures 152 mm by 65 mm.

Front: On the left side is an image of the Central Shaheed Minar, and the center features a backdrop of leaves and a blooming water lily—the national flower.

Back: The reverse side displays an illustration of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

The watermark includes the face of royal Bengal Tiger, an electrotype “500”, and the Bangladesh Bank monogram. The overall design uses predominantly green tones.

Security Features

The new note incorporates 10 security features.

The denomination printed in the top-right corner is made with color-shifting ink that changes from green to blue when tilted. A slanted miniature “500” becomes visible inside the number.

A 4-mm wide security thread, combining red and bright gold bars, appears on the left. When tilted, the red part shifts to green and displays the text “500 taka,” visible when held up to light. The gold section transforms into a moving rainbow-like strip.

For visually impaired users, five raised tactile dots appear at the lower-right portion of the front side.

Bangladesh Bank previously released redesigned notes of 20, 50, 100, and 1000 taka, following a similar modernization process.
