US President Donald Trump has warned that countries continuing to trade with Iran could face additional tariffs. He signed an executive order related to the move on Friday.
The order does not specify an exact tariff rate, though it cites 25 percent as an example. It states that tariffs may be imposed on goods imported into the United States from any country that directly or indirectly purchases products or services from Iran, or otherwise benefits from Iranian trade.
Trump has not yet commented publicly on the executive order itself. However, while traveling aboard Air Force One to Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Friday night, he reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
The tariff warning comes at a time when indirect talks between the United States and Iran have taken place in Muscat, the capital of Oman, with Omani mediation. Following the discussions, representatives from both sides expressed what they described as a “positive outlook.”
The talks were held amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, along with concerns over a possible military confrontation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Muscat for the discussions, while Trump adviser Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner represented the US side.
