Shortly after talks between Iranian and US delegations concluded in Muscat on Friday under Omani mediation, Washington announced new sanctions targeting Tehran’s oil exports.

The measures focus on tightening controls over Iran’s oil trade by imposing fresh sanctions on companies and vessels involved in transporting Iranian oil. US authorities have not clarified whether the move is directly linked to the discussions held in Oman.

US President Donald Trump described the Oman talks on Iran as “very good” following the indirect meeting between the two sides. Iran also characterized the discussions as positive and expressed hope for further engagement with Washington, praising the “constructive atmosphere” of the one-day talks in the Gulf state.

The talks took place amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. In recent days, Trump ordered the deployment of a large US naval force to the Middle East, which remains positioned near Iranian waters.

Although the discussions were facilitated by Oman to ease tensions, the Iranian and US delegations did not meet face to face.

This marked the first dialogue between the two adversaries since US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities during a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June last year.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump said, “We’ve had very good talks on Iran. We’ll be meeting again early next week.” He had earlier warned that Iran would face severe consequences if it failed to reach an agreement.

The Muscat talks followed a week of escalating tensions and growing concerns about a possible military confrontation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Oman for the meeting, while the US delegation included Trump adviser Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
