A fire that erupted in Dhaka’s Korail slum was finally put out after burning for nearly 16 hours, the Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed on Wednesday morning.
Officials announced at 9:30am that the flames had been completely extinguished. No injuries or deaths were recorded, and investigators will determine what sparked the blaze and assess the total damage.
Throughout the night, hundreds of displaced residents sought temporary shelter in open spaces like the T&T Field and Khamarbari Field.
Farhad Hossain, a local resident helping those affected, said: “A large number of homes have been destroyed. Nearly two thousand people spent the night in the open. We are trying to support them with whatever limited resources we have.”
Among those devastated by the fire was Nasrin, a resident of Korail for 18 years, who broke down in grief after losing everything she owned.
The blaze was first reported to authorities at 5:22pm on Tuesday. Nineteen firefighting units were deployed, and after about five hours of battling the flames, crews managed to bring the situation under control at around 10:35pm.
The Fire Service later confirmed that the fire was fully doused by 9:30am the following day.
