Independent Ducsu VP candidate expelled from hall over stabbing allegation

An independent candidate for the Vice President post in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu), Jalal Ahmed Jalal, has been expelled from Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall after allegedly stabbing his roommate early Tuesday.

Hall provost Md Sirajul Islam confirmed the expulsion, calling the act “heinous” and adding that steps are underway to revoke Jalal’s studentship as well.

According to reports, the incident took place around 12:45am in room 462 of the dormitory, where Jalal allegedly attacked Md Rabiul Haque, a Political Science student from the 2018–19 session. Rabiul, who sustained injuries, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Rabiul told reporters that Jalal entered the room shortly after midnight, turned on the lights and made noise. When Rabiul objected, saying he had to visit the library in the morning, Jalal became enraged, branded him an “outsider,” and stabbed him.

Jalal, however, rejected the accusation in a Facebook post. He claimed that he himself was attacked and even uploaded photos of his own injuries, further alleging that Rabiul was illegally staying in the hall. He said he had recently taken initiatives to press for the removal of unauthorized residents from DU dormitories.

DU Proctor Dr Saifuddin Ahmed said a proctorial team, along with the hall provost, visited the spot soon after the incident. “We will decide on further action after assessing the situation,” he added.
