The retail price of privately supplied liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has increased by Tk 4.42 per kilogram at the consumer level.
For January, the price of a 12-kilogram LPG cylinder has been fixed at Tk 1,306. In December 2025, the same cylinder was priced at Tk 1,253. This means the price has risen by Tk 53 this month, following a Tk 38 increase in the previous month.
The new price was announced on Sunday by Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Chairman Jalal Ahmed at a press briefing. According to the commission, the revised rates will come into effect from 6:00 pm today.
BERC revises LPG prices every month. However, in reality, LPG is often sold at rates higher than the official prices. The 12-kg cylinder is the most commonly used for household cooking, but for over a month the market has been facing supply shortages. As a result, retailers are reportedly charging Tk 800 to Tk 1,000 more per cylinder than the official rate.
Responding to questions from journalists, BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed said traders claim they are selling LPG to distributors at the fixed rates at the production level. He added that the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection is conducting drives against excessive pricing at the retail level. If any complaints are found regarding overpricing at the production stage, strict action will be taken.
Under the new pricing structure, the VAT-inclusive price of private LPG has been set at Tk 108.83 per kilogram, up from Tk 104.41 last month—an increase of Tk 4.42 per kg. Based on this rate, prices of LPG cylinders of different sizes will vary accordingly, as multiple cylinder sizes are available in the market.
Meanwhile, the price of a 12.5-kg LPG cylinder supplied by government companies has remained unchanged at Tk 825. The price of auto gas (LPG used as vehicle fuel) has been fixed at Tk 59.80 per litre, compared to Tk 57.32 in the previous month.
BERC has been regulating LPG prices since April 2021. LPG is produced mainly from propane and butane, which are imported from various countries. Each month, Saudi Arabian company Aramco publishes the prices of these two components, known as the Saudi Contract Price (CP).
Using the Saudi CP as the base price, BERC adjusts domestic LPG prices by calculating the average invoice value of imported consignments and the applicable exchange rate for the entire month.
