Despite claims of supply shortages, LPG is still available at inflated prices—even though selling above the approved rate is illegal. Yet, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has failed to ensure enforcement and punishment.
M Shamsul Alam, energy adviser to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), said the situation has pushed LPG prices beyond control under the excuse of supply constraints, placing an extra burden on consumers.
He noted that although supply is reportedly limited, cylinders can still be found at higher prices, which clearly violates the law. According to him, BERC has been unable to take effective action, leading to growing public distrust. He also criticized the lack of intervention by local administrations and government agencies, saying such inaction is unacceptable in a civilized society.
