Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, has filed an appeal challenging her three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. The appeal was submitted to the High Court on Tuesday (May 13), and the court has also condoned a delay of 587 days in filing the appeal. According to her lawyer, Barrister Kaiser Kamal, the appeal was heard by a single bench of Justice Khasruzzaman.
Previously, in August 2023, a court had sentenced Tarique Rahman to nine years and Dr. Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison over charges related to amassing illegal wealth. However, the government later suspended Zubaida’s sentence after August 5, 2024, allowing her to appeal. On May 6, after 17 years, Dr. Zubaida returned to the country and met BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia before visiting her family home.
