The ongoing season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has been heavily criticized for issues related to players’ payments, a recurring problem that remains unresolved. This has drawn sharp criticism from the World Cricketers’ Association (WCA), with its CEO, Tom Moffat, expressing his disappointment in an interview with ESPNcricinfo. Moffat condemned the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for failing to address this long-standing issue, calling the repeated instances of unpaid dues unacceptable.
This season, several teams have reportedly breached payment agreements. Players from Durbar Rajshahi protested by skipping practice sessions after not receiving their payments, leading to some of their foreign players boycotting matches as well. Despite these breaches, the team continued to participate in the tournament. Additionally, the franchise owner of Chittagong Kings admitted to failing to pay a player. Beyond salaries, several teams have also delayed providing players with daily allowances.
Moffat questioned why such problems persist after being a consistent issue since the early editions of the BPL. He remarked that this is highly disappointing and undermines the integrity of the league. Highlighting the importance of players in the success of any tournament, he emphasized that fundamental agreements must be honored to ensure players feel valued and secure.
