“Sentence effective from the day of arrest,” says Attorney General

Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman has stated that the sentences handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity will come into effect from the day the accused are taken into custody. He also expressed hope that the government will take all necessary measures to bring Sheikh Hasina back.

Speaking at a press briefing after the verdict, he said, “In this case, two of the accused have been sentenced to the maximum penalty, death, while the third, as an approver, has been given five years in prison after considering all circumstances.”

He further added that out of the five charges against Sheikh Hasina, she has been sentenced in three. The Attorney General described the verdict as historic, saying it will bring relief and serve as a milestone for justice and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
