Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals convicted of what authorities described as an “immoral act” inside a mosque in Makkah, according to the Saudi Interior Ministry.
The executions were carried out on Wednesday, the ministry said.
According to a report by Saudi news outlet Ajel, the two individuals were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Sithi Akter.
Security authorities arrested the pair and conducted an investigation before formally bringing charges against them. The case was subsequently referred to court, where they were found guilty.
The court imposed the death penalty under discretionary punishment provisions, reportedly taking into account the seriousness of the offence and the sanctity of the place and time in which it occurred.
The verdict was upheld on appeal, and a royal order was subsequently issued for the executions to be carried out.
In its statement, the Saudi Interior Ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding security and justice and enforcing Islamic law against individuals who violate the sanctity of mosques or engage in similar conduct.
The ministry also warned that anyone attempting to commit such offences in the future would face severe legal consequences.
