The first half of January has seen an increase in cold temperatures across various districts, including the capital. On Thursday morning, Dhaka was blanketed in a layer of mist, intensifying the cold compared to previous days.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, while the cold may subside in two to three days, another cold wave is expected around January 27, which could impact all or some districts.
In a 72-hour forecast, the department stated that temperatures in the southern region may slightly increase during the day and at night, while remaining mostly unchanged elsewhere. The weather across the country is likely to stay dry with partly cloudy skies. Moderate to dense fog may occur in the northwest from late night to morning, with light to moderate fog expected in other areas, potentially lasting until noon in some places.
The synoptic weather update reveals that a sub-continental high-pressure ridge lies over West Bengal and adjoining areas, while the seasonal low is positioned over the southern Bay of Bengal, extending towards the northern Bay.
A driver on a Gazipur to Motijheel route bus mentioned that fog levels are higher than in recent days, requiring careful driving with headlights to avoid accidents. Meanwhile, a vegetable vendor at Khilkhet market reported poor business as many people stayed indoors due to the cold.
The forecast for the next day suggests dry weather with partly cloudy skies across the country. Light to moderate fog is expected from late night to morning, while nighttime temperatures may rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, with a slight decrease in daytime temperatures.
