Heavy rainfall across the southeastern United States has caused severe flooding, claiming at least nine lives and leaving over half a million people without power. Roads and homes across several states were submerged, prompting rescue efforts for hundreds of stranded residents. According to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, eight fatalities were reported in his state alone, with fears that the death toll could rise further. In Georgia, another individual lost their life when a tree fell on their bed.
States such as Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina had issued storm warnings over the weekend, many of which were still recovering from Hurricane Helen’s devastation in September. Kentucky has been the hardest hit, with some areas experiencing up to 15 cm of rain, leading to widespread flooding. Officials warned that conditions could worsen, as rivers and streams continue to swell.
The National Weather Service (NWS) emphasized that the effects of the flooding might linger for days. Eric Gibson, Kentucky’s emergency management director, cautioned that rivers could rise even further, and senior forecaster Bob Oravec predicted extended impacts due to elevated water levels. Meanwhile, meteorologists warned of an approaching polar vortex early next week, which could cause temperatures to plummet across the central U.S., with Denver, Colorado, expected to drop to -10°C. Emergency shelters have already been set up for the homeless in preparation.
