Dr. Muhammad Yunus Confirms February Election, Will Hold No Post in Next Government
Dhaka, 21 August 2025 – Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, has stated that national elections will be held in February next year, and he will not occupy any position in the government formed afterward.
Writing for Utah-based Deseret News, Dr. Yunus reflected on last year’s mass uprising, his role in leading the interim government, and various reforms undertaken during his tenure.
He emphasized that the administration’s top priority is to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election, where political parties can present their platforms to voters, and all eligible citizens—including those living abroad—can cast their ballots.
Dr. Yunus recounted how the uprising, led by courageous students supported by citizens from all walks of life, ended a period of authoritarian rule in August 2024. Following the ensuing power vacuum, student leaders requested him to head the interim government, a role he initially hesitated to accept but eventually took on in recognition of the students’ sacrifices.
The interim government focused on stabilizing the country, restoring democratic processes, and compensating the families of those killed or injured during the uprising. It also prioritized recovering assets misappropriated by the previous regime, which Transparency International Bangladesh estimates amounted to $10–15 billion per year over 15 years.
Dr. Yunus highlighted the challenges faced upon taking office, including administrative inefficiency, declining foreign reserves, and an economy in disarray. Through reforms, new political participation, and support from the armed forces, the interim government worked to restore law and order and rebuild democratic institutions.
In addition to domestic priorities, Dr. Yunus cited efforts to strengthen international relationships with neighboring countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the European Union, the World Bank, and the United Nations.
He concluded by stressing the responsibility of all citizens in this critical period, saying that Bangladesh’s future as a secure and dignified nation depends on the courage, vision, and determination of its people.
