Titumir College students’ actions causing chaos for commuters: Home Adviser

On February 3, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam expressed concern over the public suffering caused by the ongoing protests of students from Government Titumir College. He criticized the students for making life difficult for the public, with their demands increasing daily, and hinted at external influences behind the protests. Speaking at a meeting on law and order for Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day, the adviser urged students to halt further disruptions. In a later statement, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder echoed the government’s stance, calling on the students to stop causing public distress.
The students had been blocking roads and the Mohakhali level crossing, bringing train services to a standstill. The protests stemmed from their demand for university status, with barricades placed at key locations like Mohakhali Link Road. A procession was organized, further disrupting traffic and creating long tailbacks, forcing many commuters to walk to their destinations. In response, additional police forces were deployed to manage the situation and prevent further unrest. Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud clarified that there were no plans to make Titumir College an independent university, although the college is part of an expert committee’s initiative to bring several Dhaka University-affiliated colleges under a separate university.
