Public Holiday Declared for Khaleda Zia’s Death

The government has announced three days of national mourning from Wednesday to Friday (December 31 and January 1–2) following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. In addition, a nationwide public holiday will be observed on Wednesday, December 31.

The announcement was made today at noon by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus in an address to the nation.

Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday, December 30, at 6 a.m. at Evercare Hospital. She was 80 years old at the time of her death.

The Chief Adviser remarked, “Begum Khaleda Zia was a highly respected figure in Bangladesh’s political history. Her remarkable efforts in promoting democracy, multi-party politics, and protecting citizens’ rights will remain an enduring part of our history.

Her uncompromising leadership against dictatorship and fascism repeatedly guided the nation out of undemocratic situations and inspired the people with hope for freedom. Her brilliant contributions to the country and the nation will always be remembered with deep respect.”

He further stated, “In honor of the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, I have declared three days of national mourning and a one-day public holiday on the day of her funeral prayers. I urge everyone to maintain discipline while observing all mourning activities, including the funeral prayers.”
