BNP Confident Polls Will Take Place in February 2026: Fakhrul
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that political parties now believe the next parliamentary election is certain to be held in February 2026.
Speaking to journalists at a hotel in New York yesterday, Fakhrul noted that the chief adviser’s recent remarks—both at the United Nations and in later statements—have removed doubts over the election schedule. “The chief adviser’s address at the UN was firm, and based on his comments since then, we, the political parties, are convinced that the vote will be held in February 2026,” he said.
Earlier, Fakhrul was seen alongside Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during his address to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The BNP leader said Yunus explained the background of the interim government, formed after mass protests, and highlighted its efforts over the past year to stabilise both politics and the economy.
Regarding Jamaat-e-Islami’s proposal for proportional representation, Fakhrul clarified: “We do not support PR in the lower house, nor have we advocated it in the upper house. These are matters that can be debated and settled later.”
He also referred to BNP’s consistent calls for reforms, citing Khaleda Zia’s Vision 2030 and Tarique Rahman’s 31-point plan as examples of the party’s agenda for political and structural change.
Fakhrul welcomed the chief adviser’s decision to involve opposition parties at the UNGA. “We are pleased that, for the first time, the opposition has been included in the government’s activities abroad. This reflects national unity, which Bangladesh needs at this moment,” he said.
