Dr. Yunus urges Qatar Charity to support modern education in madrasas

During a meeting on April 23 in Doha, held on the sidelines of the Earthna Summit, Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus sought support from Qatar Charity to introduce technology education for the country’s millions of madrasa students. Praising Qatar Charity’s ongoing humanitarian efforts in Bangladesh—such as orphan sponsorships and LPG distribution to Rohingya refugees—Dr. Yunus highlighted the growing interest among madrasa students in learning emerging technologies like computer programming and artificial intelligence. He welcomed any assistance for this group and suggested that Qatar Charity could partner directly with madrasas to integrate tech education into their curriculum, emphasizing the students’ capacity to learn quickly. In response, Qatar Charity’s acting chief, Nawaf Abdullah Al Hammadi, said the organization had already supported several madrasas through skill-building and livelihood programs and assured the proposal would be seriously considered. The discussion also covered continued aid for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, with Dr. Yunus urging the organization to maintain LPG distribution and support in education and healthcare. Stressing the importance of girls’ education, he called for targeted assistance for female madrasa students. Both leaders also discussed the impact of microfinance in Bangladesh and explored potential collaborations with local NGOs to expand efforts in poverty alleviation.
