Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, has departed for the United Kingdom on a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. His flight, operated by Emirates Airlines, left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for London on Monday, June 9, at 7:30 PM, accompanied by his delegation, according to his Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Earlier, on June 4, Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique briefed the media, stating that Dr. Yunus is scheduled to meet King Charles III and hold bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The visit will also include meetings with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, other senior ministers, prominent political figures, and influential leaders from the British business community.

In recognition of his lifelong contributions to promoting peace, sustainability, and harmony between people and the environment, Professor Yunus has been selected for the prestigious “King Charles III Harmony Award 2025.” The award will be presented to him at a ceremony on June 12 at St. James’s Palace in London.

The King’s Foundation, established in 1990 by the then Prince of Wales, annually honors individuals who have made exemplary contributions to sustainable development and humanitarian efforts.

During his stay, Dr. Yunus is also expected to hold courtesy meetings with the Secretary-Generals of the Commonwealth and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where he will highlight Bangladesh’s expanding role in international affairs. Additionally, on June 11, he will deliver a special address at Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Sources from the Chief Advisor’s office mentioned that the visit will particularly emphasize the UK’s continued support for Bangladesh’s democratic progress and the repatriation of funds illicitly transferred abroad. Dr. Yunus is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on June 14.
