Bangladesh has reported seven more deaths involving suspected measles symptoms and 1,315 new patients with measles or measles-like symptoms over a 24-hour period, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The figures were released in the DGHS’s regular measles update on Thursday, covering the period from 8 am Wednesday to 8 am Thursday.

The health authority said all seven deaths involved patients with suspected measles symptoms. No deaths among children with laboratory-confirmed measles were reported during the period.

Since March 15 this year, the number of deaths associated with suspected measles has reached 1,144, while 105 deaths have been confirmed as measles-related.

The cumulative number of suspected measles cases has risen to 226,357 since March 15, including 23,695 confirmed cases, according to the DGHS.

During the same period, 201,468 patients with suspected measles symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 193,301 recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

The latest figures highlight the continuing public health burden associated with the outbreak, with suspected cases and deaths remaining substantially higher than the number of laboratory-confirmed infections and fatalities.
