Dr. Asif Nazrul, Adviser on Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, emphasized the necessity of reforms, stating that given about a year, the reform initiatives could be implemented effectively. Speaking at a dialogue organized by the Center for Governance Studies at the SIRDAP auditorium on Monday, December 23, he noted that the Interim Government’s Chief Adviser and the Reform Commission had verbally agreed to the implementation of the proposed reforms aimed at building national consensus.
Dr. Nazrul highlighted that a strong consensus would make it difficult for future governments to reverse or nullify these reforms. He criticized the excessive powers granted to the judiciary under the previous regime, which were allegedly used to sustain authoritarian rule. This included instances where individuals were detained for long periods without proven guilt. He argued that regular, fair elections every five years could have prevented such misuse of judicial authority. Additionally, he pointed out that judicial appointments in the higher courts were often politically motivated and outlined plans to finalize the judicial recruitment process based on three proposed reforms.
