The Palestinian Authority released a statement welcoming the proposal and saying it is ready to take part in implementing it. Diplomats noted that this endorsement last week played a key role in preventing a Russian veto.
In a social-media post, Donald Trump described the vote as “a truly historic moment.” He added that the names of the members of the proposed “Board of Peace,” along with several other important announcements, would be revealed in the coming weeks.
A Path Toward a Palestinian State
Because the proposal refers to the possibility of a future independent Palestinian state, it has sparked debate inside Israel.
According to the document, once the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program and reconstruction in Gaza progresses, conditions could emerge for a credible pathway toward Palestinian self-determination and eventual statehood.
China’s ambassador to the UN abstained from the vote as well. Alongside Russia’s envoy, he argued that the proposal did not define a clear role for the United Nations in shaping Gaza’s future governance.
The resolution further states that the United States will launch talks between Israel and the Palestinians to outline a political horizon aimed at peaceful and prosperous coexistence.
Israel’s Position
A day before the vote, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, under pressure from hard-right ministers in his coalition, reaffirmed that “Israel still opposes a Palestinian state.” He vowed that Gaza would be demilitarized “one way or another — whether through an easier path or a more difficult one.”
