The Noakhali Journalists’ Forum (NJF) Dhaka has demanded an extension of Eid holidays for media professionals ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a statement issued today, NJF’s General Secretary and Banglavision’s Special Correspondent, S.M. Faiz, along with other leaders of the organization, called for this extension.
The NJF Dhaka leaders stated that government employees are receiving an extended holiday during Eid-ul-Fitr this year. In addition to the official five-day Eid holiday, they will also benefit from other holidays, including Independence Day, Shab-e-Qadr, and weekends. As a result, the last week of March and the first week of April will effectively be a holiday period for them.
However, ignoring the needs of media professionals, the Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) has announced only a three-day holiday, which NJF Dhaka considers discriminatory. Protesting this decision, they urged NOAB to extend the Eid holiday for journalists to at least five days, aligning with government holidays.
It is worth noting that NOAB has declared a three-day newspaper closure for Eid-ul-Fitr. According to their announcement, newspapers will remain closed on March 30, 31, and April 1. If Eid falls on April 1, newspapers will also remain closed on April 2. Various journalist organizations have already issued statements protesting NOAB’s decision.
