In recent months, numerous newspapers have published reports against Syed Mainul Hasan, the Chief Engineer of the Department of Roads and Highways. The media has highlighted his strong dominance under the former dictator Sheikh Hasina’s government. As a member of the Bangabandhu Engineers Association, he holds a powerful position—treating the Roads and Highways Department almost like his personal fortress.
This engineer, known for his loyalty to the Awami League, is reportedly using party affiliations to secure his position and promote like-minded colleagues. Many are now asking: Can he truly present himself as a reformer while sidelining other engineers by branding them with Awami tags and turning them into OSDs?
Reports against him have surfaced in at least fifty newspapers. Is he now frustrated with the media? Apparently so—he has banned media access to the Roads and Highways building. Can he justify pushing journalists away in the name of “security”? Recently, two vehicles with media stickers were barred from entering the RHD building. When the journalists got out of the cars and attempted to enter, security guards stopped them and reportedly said, “Only officers and contractors are allowed. Chief Sir’s orders.”
This raises a critical question: For how long can he continue to isolate himself and silence scrutiny under the excuse of “security”?
