US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sent a letter to Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, in an effort to prevent renewed military strikes against Iran and revive peace negotiations, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The newspaper reported on Wednesday that Vance sent the letter to Rezaei, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, at the direction of President Donald Trump. The message reportedly focused on establishing a framework for potential negotiations.
However, Washington is also preparing for the possibility of renewed military action. According to The Wall Street Journal, the United States could launch a “short and intense military campaign” against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections.
The report said Washington had urged several Arab countries in the Gulf region to prepare for such a possibility. Trump, however, has not yet made a final decision on whether to proceed with military action.
Meanwhile, Iran’s military has warned that any new attack would trigger a broader retaliatory response.
Rezaei said Iranian counterstrikes would target infrastructure linked to the United States, particularly data centres and artificial intelligence facilities.
The reported diplomatic outreach and military preparations underscore the uncertainty surrounding Washington’s next move, as efforts to reopen negotiations continue alongside warnings of a potentially wider regional confrontation.
The details of the reported letter and the potential military operation were attributed to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal. No final US decision on a new campaign was reported.
