Tension in the Area as One of the Accused Is a Local Awami League Leader and Murder Case Suspect

On May 19, Md. Sujayet Molla, a landlord in the Nabinygar Housing area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka, was brutally attacked while demanding monthly rent. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in front of Plot 36 on Road 10. The violent assault has sparked widespread concern and unrest among local residents.

According to the victim and local sources, Sujayet Molla approached his tenant Korban Ali to collect the regular rent, but the tenant and his associates became enraged. Shortly after, Korban Ali, along with Imran, Miraj, Sagar, Zakir, and Md. Mizanur Rahman, launched a machete attack on the landlord. Severely injured, Molla was rescued by locals and rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he received 16 stitches to his head. He remains under medical care but is reportedly out of danger.

It has been revealed that one of the attackers, Md. Mizanur Rahman, is the president of the Nabinygar unit of the Awami League and is also the 7th accused in the controversial July Movement murder case. His political identity has brought further attention to the case and raised new questions.

The injured Sujayet Molla, who has been involved in BNP politics for years, stated that he has faced repeated political harassment and attacks over the past 17 years. “The attackers used to dominate the area under the protection of the Awami League and continue to create terror with weapons. Last August, they even carried out an armed attack on students and civilians in front of Allah Karim Mosque in Mohammadpur,” he said.

Mohammadpur Police have accepted a formal complaint filed by the victim and confirmed that they are also investigating the criminal history of the accused. Locals expressed fear and outrage over the incident and have called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
