Tarique Rahman Says His Return Home Is Not His “Personal Decision Alone” Amid Ongoing Crisis

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday morning, BNP’s acting chair Tarique Rahman reflected on the uncertainty surrounding his potential return to Bangladesh, particularly as his mother, former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, is reportedly receiving intensive hospital care. Supporters across the country have been holding prayers for her recovery, and the head of the interim government has publicly wished her well, promising full medical support.

Rahman noted that the emotional weight of the situation is immense. He wrote that, like any son, he wishes to be near his mother during a difficult time, but emphasized that such a decision is not entirely his to make. According to him, various political and legal realities restrict the possibility of an immediate return. He added that his family remains hopeful that once the broader political environment shifts in a favorable direction, his long period of waiting and uncertainty will finally come to an end.

Expressing gratitude, Rahman acknowledged the medical teams at home and abroad who have been overseeing his mother’s treatment with what he described as professionalism and dedication. He also mentioned that several friendly nations have shown willingness to assist with advanced medical arrangements if needed.

On behalf of the family, he extended appreciation to everyone who has been offering prayers and support, urging the public to continue keeping the former leader in their thoughts as she battles her illness.
