Khaleda Zia’s physical condition deteriorated sharply late Sunday night, prompting doctors to shift her to the ICU in the early hours of Monday. Medical staff are currently treating her with ventilatory support.
A BNP leader who visited Evercare Hospital on Monday evening said after speaking with the doctors that her condition is critical, though she is not on full life support. According to him, she is receiving ventilation assistance but the situation remains extremely serious.
Earlier in the day, BNP Vice-Chairman Ahmed Azam Khan told reporters that Khaleda Zia had entered a “very critical state” since Sunday night. He tried to see her at the hospital but was unable to meet her. Speaking to journalists outside, he explained that she is being supported by ventilation in the ICU and is fighting to recover, but she has not yet reached a stable condition.
Khaleda Zia, who has been severely ill for days, had remained almost unresponsive since last Wednesday. She spoke briefly on Saturday, but doctors warned that the coming days would be crucial, noting that stable kidney function alone would not be enough to ensure overall improvement.
Chinese Medical Team Joins Treatment
A group of specialist physicians from China arrived at Evercare Hospital on Monday evening to assist in her treatment. Her personal physician, Al Mamun, said that the main Chinese team is expected to arrive today (Tuesday).
Khaleda Zia is currently under the care of a combined medical board consisting of Bangladeshi specialists and experts from Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States and London Clinic in the UK. The Chinese doctors are now joining this collaborative effort.
The BNP chairperson has been hospitalized since November 23. Multiple health complications—including liver failure, reduced kidney function, respiratory issues, and diabetes—have made her treatment extremely challenging. As her condition worsened in recent days, she was moved from a high-dependency unit to the ICU early Monday morning.
BNP Requests Public Not to Be Misled
BNP leaders have alleged that misleading information regarding Khaleda Zia’s health is being spread on various platforms. The party urged the media to rely only on statements from her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, for accurate updates.
In a separate statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told media outlets that her condition is “stable under close observation,” calling for people not to be confused by unverified reports.
Across the country, BNP leaders, activists, and supporters continued holding prayers and special religious programs on Monday, wishing for her recovery. Some also performed charitable acts and distributed meat among the poor in hopes of divine blessings for her health.
At a prayer gathering in Mohammadpur, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that her treatment is ongoing in the CCU under strict monitoring and urged everyone to ignore misleading comments circulating about her condition.
