BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin to discuss the official gazette publication following the Election Tribunal’s verdict recognizing him as the rightful mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The meeting took place on Thursday (April 24) at the Election Commission office in Agargaon.
Ishraq told reporters that the Election Commission received the tribunal verdict copy on April 15, and as per regulations, the gazette must be issued within 10 working days — making April 29 the deadline. He added that further details regarding his legal team would be shared after the gazette is published.
Earlier, on April 22, the EC had sent a letter to the Ministry of Law seeking an opinion on whether the gazette should be issued announcing Ishraq’s victory. The tribunal had invalidated the results of the DSCC election held on March 27, 2020, and declared Ishraq, the son of former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, as the winner.
The original election was held on February 1, 2020, in which Awami League’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was declared mayor for the south. The official gazette for that result was published on February 2, 2020. Taposh and his northern counterpart had been serving as mayors until their removal following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 of last year.
