BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has called for transparency regarding the recent meeting between Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin. Speaking to journalists at his residence in Gulshan on Friday (June 27), Salahuddin stated that the BNP believes the discussion centered around holding the national election in February. He added that, according to the party’s assessment, preparations for the election could be completed by September.
He further speculated that the Chief Adviser may have conveyed a message to the CEC to prepare for an election timeline around February, though clarity will only come once both sides confirm the details. Emphasizing that the national election is the real goal—not local government polls—Salahuddin argued that all political parties are in agreement on this point. He asserted that organizing local elections within the current timeframe is impractical, and the Election Commission’s primary responsibility should be to arrange the national election. He concluded by expressing hope that the interim government would maintain neutrality in managing the electoral process.
